BIO

Andrew Sentoogo Ssemata is a clinical neuropsychologist and social behavioural scientist with a strong interdisciplinary background in mental health, disability research, and public health. He holds a PhD in clinical neuropsychology from the Department of Psychiatry, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health D43 training grant. He also earned a Master’s degree in Health Psychology from the School of Psychology, College of Health and Life Sciences at Aston University, Birmingham, UK, under the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.

 

As part of his doctoral training, Andrew undertook a prestigious PhD split-site fellowship, as an honorary research fellow at Inherited Metabolic Diseases unit of the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, UK, in collaboration with Aston University and the University of Birmingham. His research during this period focused on Comparing neuropsychological function/ cognitive outcomes between UK children with phenylketonuria and Ugandan children with iron deficiency with a strong emphasis on cross-cultural perspectives in mental health.

 

Andrew currently serves as a Research Fellow at the International Centre for Evidence in Disability (ICED) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and coordinates the Disability Research Group led by Associate Professor Femke Bannink Mbazzi under the Non-Communicable Disease Research Theme at the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit. The group focusses on improving the health, development and quality of life of people with disabilities in Uganda and the wider East African region.
