BIO
Wendy Graham is a research scientist in maternal and perinatal health improvement, primarily in low-and-middle-income countries. Her career spans over 35 years, having trained at Sheffield and Oxford universities. She now holds a part-time position (20%FTE) as Professor of Obstetric Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and is also Emeritus Professor at the University of Aberdeen.
The initial focus of Prof Graham’s work was the measurement and prevention of maternal mortality, setting-up surveillance systems in collaboration with partners in LMICs and with major international organizations, such as WHO. For the last decade, she has concentrated on epidemiological and implementation research for the reduction of healthcare-associated infections among mothers and newborns on maternity wards, including interventions to improve Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and WASH, and the reduction of AMR.
With a long-term ambition for LSHTM to play a stronger role in research on maternity services in the UK, Prof Graham supported a successful application for NIHR funding on maternity disparities over the period 2025-2030. LSHTM is leading one of just nine collaborative groups selected by NIHR across the UK to be part of this major research Consortium with a £50 million fund. Prof Graham's main contribution to this new initiative will involve mentoring senior and junior scientistis undertaking evidence syntheses and intervention research to reduce maternity disparities in the UK.
