RESEARCH INTERESTS

My work focuses on the epidemiology of emerging long-term non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in low-income settings in sub-Saharan Africa, where these conditions often coexist with long-term communicable diseases such as HIV. In 2015, supported by a Wellcome Clinical Postdoctoral Fellowship, I established a community-based stroke surveillance system in rural Malawi to quantify the incidence and burden of stroke and to investigate key modifiable risk factors. Building on this foundation, in 2021 I was awarded a Wellcome Clinical Career Development Fellowship to expand surveillance activities to other major cardiovascular conditions across both rural and urban populations in Malawi. I collaborate closely with the ALPHA Network of longitudinal HIV studies in sub-Saharan Africa and am a co-investigator on the Africa Non-Communicable Disease Longitudinal Data Alliance (ANDLA). I also co-organise the Multimorbidity Special Interest Group within the Centre for Global Chronic Conditions (CGCC).
